terms of use
What happens to a letter after you send it, and what you are and are not agreeing to.
Your writing stays yours
You keep the copyright in everything you write. Sending a letter gives us permission to publish it. It does not transfer ownership, and it does not stop you using your own words anywhere else, at any time.
What you agree to
That we may publish your letter in the archive on this website, under the name you chose or as Anonymous, once it has been read and approved. You can change your mind later. Your words stay yours to use elsewhere. Nothing is paid. This covers the archive on this website and nothing else.
What we would have to ask you about separately
Sending a letter does not agree to any of these. If one comes up, we will write and ask, and saying no does not affect your letter staying in the archive.
- Artworks and prints. An excerpt from your letter used alongside or within a photographic artwork, including prints that may be sold to support the project.
- Readings. Your letter read aloud, including as part of Love Letters After Dark.
- Exhibitions. Your letter or an excerpt shown in a physical space.
- Promotion. Your letter or an excerpt used in material about the project.
Letters already in the archive
Some letters came from an earlier project, and some were written by hand at an installation. Those writers agreed to what they were shown at the time, and that is what still applies to them. Nothing on this page changes it.
Reading and editing
Every letter is read before anything is published. Editing is limited to spelling and line breaks. If a letter needs more than that, we will ask you rather than change it.
A letter can be declined. That is not a judgement of the person who wrote it.
Taking your letter back
Write to hello@withlovefromthefuture.com and we will unpublish it.
Please know what cannot be undone. A letter that has been public may have been saved, screenshotted, printed or picked up by a search engine. We can remove it from this site and stop using it. We cannot reach somebody else’s copy. If an excerpt has already been printed or exhibited, those objects exist. We will make no more and withdraw the work where we can.
Reading the archive
These letters belong to the people who wrote them. Please ask before reproducing one elsewhere or using it in your own work. Quoting a letter when you write or talk about the project, with the name or Anonymous as it appears, is welcome.
Age
Leaving a letter here is intended for people aged 16 and over. If you are younger and want your letter in the archive, please write to us instead of using the form, and we will talk about how to do that properly.
This is not a support service
With Love, From the Future is a work of art and a community archive. It is not counselling or a crisis service, and nobody is watching submissions for people in danger. If you want to talk to someone, the support page lists services by country. In an emergency, call your local emergency number.
