privacy
Some of what you write here is meant to be read by strangers. Some of what you give us is not. This page explains which is which.
The project is run by Noa Wolf Smith Fletcher, a sole trader in Victoria, Australia. You can write to us at hello@withlovefromthefuture.com.
What we collect
Only what the form asks for: your letter, the age you are writing from, who you are writing to, a line about where or when you wrote it, any feelings you choose, a name or nothing at all, your email address, and your city and country if you want to give them.
There is no account to create and no profile kept.
What is public and what is not
If your letter is approved, the archive may show your letter, the ages, your context line, the feelings it is filed under, and either the name you gave or the word Anonymous.
Your email address, city and country are never published and never shown beside your letter. They are kept in a separate part of the database that the public pages do not read from.
You decide what goes in your letter and whether your name goes with it. If something in a letter looks like it would identify you, or someone else, in a way you may not have intended, we will ask you before publishing.
Who reads your letter
Noa, and nobody else. There is no moderation team and no outside reviewers.
How long we keep it
Approved letters stay in the archive until you ask us to remove yours, or until the project ends.
Your contact details are kept while they are needed for moderation and for any contact about your letter, and you can ask us to delete them at any time. We also keep a record of what you agreed to, because consent means little without one.
Your choices
You can ask what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to unpublish your letter, or ask us to delete your personal details. Write to hello@withlovefromthefuture.com. We may need to check the request comes from you, usually by replying to the address your letter was sent from.
We can remove a letter from this site and stop using it. We cannot reach copies other people have already saved, printed or shared.
Cookies and tracking
There is no analytics, no advertising, and no third-party tracking of any kind on this site. No cookie is set for visitors. The only cookie belongs to the moderation area and is set when Noa signs in.
Typefaces are served from this site rather than fetched from Google, so reading a letter does not tell another company that you did. The archive counts how many times a letter has been opened, as a number on the letter. It records nothing about who opened it.
To stop the letter form and the sign-in page being flooded, the site briefly limits how often they can be used from one connection. For that it keeps a scrambled code made from your internet address, never the address itself, and deletes it after a day.
Where this site lives
Like any website, this one runs on a hosting service, and hosting services normally record technical information such as IP addresses and which pages were requested. That happens below the website, and we do not use it to build a picture of any reader.
The site runs on Hostinger. Your letter and the details you give pass through Hostinger’s servers on their way to the database, which is provided by Neon and located in Sydney, Australia. That is where letters and contact details are kept.
The photographs in the archive are Noa’s work, stored with Cloudflare. Nothing you send is stored there, and location data is removed from photographs before they are published.
Security
What is in place:
- Email addresses and locations sit in a separate database table that the public pages never query.
- The moderation area is password protected, and every page in it is checked before it loads.
- The sign-in session is signed and cannot be read by scripts.
- Your letter and details are stored only in the database named above, reached over encrypted connections, and are not shared with anyone else.
No website can promise to be completely secure, and this one does not. If you notice a problem with how information here is handled, please tell us.
Questions and complaints
Write to us first. If you are not satisfied with our answer, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner takes privacy complaints at oaic.gov.au.
Changes
If this page changes in a way that affects letters already sent, we will try to tell the people affected where we can reach them. Otherwise the change will be noted here with its date.
