with love, from the future

written at 24 · to my 17-year-old self

You are allowed to keep parts of yourself private, even from people who love you. You are allowed to change your mind about what feels safe to say, to leave questions unanswered, to let someone misunderstand you without rushing to correct them. There may have been years when explaining yourself felt like the only way to be accepted, when you learned to offer up pieces of your life as evidence that you deserved to belong. But you do not have to keep doing that. The people who truly want to know you will make room for what you choose to tell them, and they will respect the things you hold close. Your life is yours to live, not a story you must continually defend.
